Physics

Atomic Force Microscope Lab

Atomic Force Microscope Lab

The atomic force microscope (AFM) lab contains a research grade Bruker Dimension Edge AFM, capable of nanometer scale surface characterization.  The AFM is used by TCNJ physics, chemistry, and engineering students who also conduct training on the instrument. Contact Dr. David McGee (mcgeed@tcnj.edu) for more information.

Observatory

Observatory

TCNJ has two observatories. The dome situated on top of the physics side of the science complex (left in the photo) is currently open for use by all astronomy classes, e.g., PHY162 and PHY163, as well as the general student population and the public. The second dome is used for astronomical research.

Directions to the observatory:
From the ground floor of the Physics Building, take the elevator to the 3rd floor. Take a left out of the elevator and follow the corridor around two corners. There is a flight of stairs on your left. (If you pass between two labs with full-length glass windows, you have gone too far.) Take the stairs up to the fourth floor.
Neurophysics Lab

Neurophysics Lab

Research into the physics of living neuronal networks using techniques such as laser scanning photostimulation and calcium imaging. Science Complex P-304. Please visit Dr. Nguyen’s Research page for more information.

Photonics Lab

Photonics Lab

The photonics lab contains a variety of lasers, cameras, and spatial light modulators for research on novel materials for information display.  The lab is supported through NSF funding and is managed by David McGee.

Planetarium

Planetarium

TCNJ’s Paul S. Hiack Planetarium is a 40-seat planetarium that hosts both a Zeiss projector and a Digitalis projector. During the semester, the Physics Department hosts monthly shows in the planetarium, written and presented by students, that are open to TCNJ and the surrounding community! For more information and to RSVP for a planetarium show, please visit observatory.tcnj.edu/planetarium.
