Materials Science

Materials Science Coordinator- Dr. Romulo Ochoa

The Materials Science specialization is an interdisciplinary program open to Chemistry and Physics majors who have a strong interest in exploring the mechanical, optical, thermal, and electrical properties of solid materials and their application. Students considering the Materials Science specialization should have a strong interest in both physics and chemistry. Students will be prepared to pursue careers or graduate study in physics, biophysics, or materials science. Students interested in the specialization should contact one of the following Physics faculty members by their sophomore year: Drs. Capece, Magee, McGee, or Ochoa.

Required courses:

  • PHY 311,  PHY 451, or CHE 410 (Instrumental Analysis)
  • Three of the following, minimum one PHY and minimum one CHE:
    • PHY 345
    • PHY 436
    • CHE 451 (Inorganic Chemistry I)
    • CHE 478 (Special Topics in Condensed Matter, may be taken more than once)
    • PHY 478 (Special Topics in Condensed Matter)
